What is the first step in my remodel?

What is the first step in my remodel?

Deciding to remodel your kitchen, bathroom, or basement is a big decision (but a really easy one to make when you can’t stand your current room!). You want a new room, but where do you go from there?

Think about what you like or don’t like

As you think about your new space, consider what you like or don’t like about your current room. Do you hate the layout? Would you rather have an island or double vanity? Do you want a bigger shower? Would you rather have a game room instead of a media room? As you make a list, choose a goal for your new space. What is the primary function of your new space? Deciding on a goal can help you make other decisions in the space, such as furnishings and space allotment.

Get ideas

Once you’ve identified your goal and what you don’t want, start to get ideas for your new kitchen, bathroom, or basement. Look online and visit your friends’ and family member’s homes to see what they’ve done. As you screen potential contractors, choose an experienced contractor and ask him or her for recommendations. Vet your contractors with other questions like, “how many other jobs have you done? How long have you been in business?”

Set a budget

If you are on a tight budget, decide ahead of time how you want to allocate your funds. Are you willing to do some of the work on your own? Does your contractor have ideas on how you can save money during your remodel? Your contractor may be able to suggest budget-friendly changes, such as adding high-quality counter tops or lighting that can make a high impact without busting your budget.

Request an estimate

The last step is to contact a contractor and get a quote for the project. Once you’ve sorted through your estimates, it’s time to get ready for your project start date—and your new room!
