Vinyl or Wood Windows: Which is right for your home?

When it comes to replace your less-than-stellar windows, the number one question on everyone’s mind is cost. The second question is about the new windows. Which is better? Vinyl or wood? Double hung or casement?

The cheaper option for the latter question is the same windows that are already in the home. Switching from double hung to casement, or visa versa, costs more because of extra labor involved in installing different sizes of windows.

The next question is what type of window to buy: vinyl or wood. These are the two most common window materials, and both come with pros and cons that should be considered.
Vinyl
Pros: Energy efficient, cheaper than wood, long lasting, usually comes in white but can get wood grain look

Cons: Not everyone likes the look of vinyl
Wood
Pros: Energy efficient, more expensive than vinyl, long lasting, can choose the color of the window

Cons: Wood windows need to be restained and sealed every 3-4 years
Unsafe steps
When it comes down to deciding what type of window material is right for your home, factor cost, looks, and the amount of maintenance into the decision. Which window fits your budget? If you are on a tight budget, vinyl windows are the less expensive option. What window would look best with your home? If you have a historic home or a lot of wood in the home, wood windows would fit best with your existing décor. Do you want to maintain the windows every few years? If not, vinyl windows are maintenance-free.
