Signs Your Patio Door Needs Replacement

You can find a million articles on replacing old windows when they show signs that it’s time to go. What about patio doors? They allow in extra light, give easy access to your outdoor space and are another part of maintaining an energy efficient home. That’s why it’s so important to look for signs your patio door needs replacement:

• Doesn’t pass the flame test. A simple way to test for draftiness is to hold a flame in front of the patio door. If the flame flickers, it’s time to replace that window.

• Mold in between the panes. If you can see green in between the panes and it doesn’t clean off, that means the seals in your patio door window are giving out or are completely broken. Unfortunately, the only way to remedy this situation is to replace your patio door.

• Security issues. Undoubtedly, you installed your patio door to let in light, or open up a room, but that doesn’t mean you want people to break in. If your patio door handle is really just to look at, and not to secure your home, it’s time to replace the patio door.

• Water leaks. If your flooring or drywall shows signs of water leaks, contact a contractor to investigate the problem. Bubbling drywalls, water stains, and warped flooring all signal that your patio door is allowing water to seep in, instead of keeping it out. If left without attention, water leaks can cause mold to grow, and permanently damage your flooring, wood around your patio door and drywall.

• Doesn’t open and close easily. A door that doesn’t open and close properly doesn’t seem like a big deal, does it? You just pick it up a bit, or push it harder or…unfortunately, a door that gives you real hassles when trying to open and close it may be a patio door that needs to be replaced. If cleaning the patio door track doesn’t work, call a contractor for a free quote for patio door replacement.
