Deck Add-Ons to Consider Before You Build

Backyard grilling is practically the official state pastime in Wisconsin. Who doesn’t love to grill a good brat out on the deck? A good grill-out isn’t complete without the perfect deck with adequate grilling and entertainment space AND a few other features we’d highly recommend.
Composite decking
Composite decking used to be the new kid on the block, but not anymore. We’ve installed composite decking several times, and the decking product has come along way in a short amount of time. Composite decking comes in a variety of colors (and textures) with the huge benefit of being maintenance-free. Composite decking never needs to be stained or sealed unlike cedar and treated lumber.
Metal balusters
If you’ve ever had to stain a wood baluster, you’ll understand how valuable a maintenance-free railing can be. Wood balusters, those pieces under the railing, can be incredibly difficult to cover because of their awkward shape. Metal balusters never need to be stained and look great. They are also very durable and long-lasting.
Cover
Having a deck is great. Having a deck that burns the feet and never gets used because of the hot sun is bad. If your deck is in full sun for most of the day, invest in a permanent color that can give you a reprieve from the heat. Consider a pergola or gazebo, or
Stairs
Access might be one of the most overlooked aspects of a deck. Consider adding steps so you can get access to the backyard, lower or upper level of the house. If you choose metal balusters, continue to use the metal balusters on your stairs for a cohesive look---and access to the perfect grilling deck.
